Skyline Research Institute

Founded in 2020, Skyline Research Institute (SRI) provides educational opportunities and resources for lifelong learners to recognize, understand, and analyze family influences in contemporary life. We collaborate with educators, policy experts, researchers, and professionals across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

SRI seeks to equip the next generation and prepare visionary leaders with the skills needed to confront the negative consequences of illiteracy about the family through training in education and the professions.

We measure our success by how effectively we advance public understanding of marriage and family across multiple sectors, creating new opportunities and resources for students, educators, government officials, professionals, and lifelong learners to develop, critically reflect on, and act upon a deeper understanding of the family as the most fundamental unit of society.

A Letter from the Board

The family is a powerful force in the human experience. From the beginning of history to our contemporary moment, families continue to shape the full range of human identity. Whether in dysfunction and disarray or in profound acts of love, selflessness, courage, and compassion, families influence individuals and society in countless ways.

In spite of this reality, few understand the immense value, capacity, power, and influence of families in the secular arenas of life. There is an urgent need to understand the ways family and family influences are interwoven into all parts of the social, cultural, spiritual, and political fabric of our world.

We have all witnessed tangible consequences of partial or superficial understanding of the critical role the family plays in maintaining strong, stable, flourishing communities and nations. More and more, society is neglecting to view the world through a family-oriented lens. There is a growing lack of literacy about the family.

Whether we realize it or not, family illiteracy affects all our lives in very real ways. A lack of understanding about families and their immense power for good has many consequences, most notably that the role of the family becomes devalued in public life. When there is a lack of literacy about the family’s indispensable role in creating and maintaining strong, stable societies, marriage and family become devalued. This, in turn, devalues the family’s unique role in nurturing, protecting, and valuing the next generation. The brunt of this burden is borne by those least able to bear it: children.

We have seen this play out in significant ways with sweeping cultural and political change flooding the earth. We have also seen it closer to home with our families, friends, communities, and at times, in our places of worship, where the influence of entertainment, academia, and social media obscure the critically important roles that healthy marriages and families play in public life and for the next generation.

However, with improved family literacy, future generations can begin to view the world through a family lens. We’re confident that a shift toward family and public life initiatives will encourage a renaissance of successful marriages and families in which all human life is valued and families flourish.
